A perforated eardrum occurs when an opening or hole in the thin layer of tissue (eardrum) separates the outer and middle ear. An infection, very loud noises, injury to the face/ear, and changes in pressure may cause a perforated eardrum. The hearing is affected and it may cause pain or discomfort.
